Liquid Assets: The hearty reds for fall dishes
Louis Martini 2008 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon:
For the last few vintages, Louis Martini's Sonoma county cabernet sauvignon has earned plenty of "bang for the buck" recognition. Though we're not big point chasers, 90 points from Robert Parker is a nice coup for a California cabernet under $20. This wine's selling point is its overall drinkability, and the current vintage is no exception. You'll find plenty of black cherry and cassis flavors, with dusty tannins and a pleasing touch of vanilla from the oak. It's a wine that'll please casual drinkers and oenophiles alike. Widely available.

Give Thanks For Wine
Louis M. Martini Lot 1 Cabernet Sauvignon
Created by the Cellar No. 254 microwinery, which was introduced in 2003 as an “artist’s studio” for the Gallo and Martini family winemakers to experiment with small-production artisan red wines, this Cab is complex, balanced and well-suited to accompany rich foods. An impressive dinner selection.

A Napa Institution
Michael Martini is a big man. While his physical stature, his outsized personality and his gravelly voice might initially lead one to believe him to be a hard case, I caught a glimpse of the iconic winemaker's softer side one stunningly hot afternoon earlier this month. We were standing in Martini's famed Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma County, looking out over 100-year-old grape vines that fell from the hillside, giving way to an epic view all the way to San Francisco Bay and the red towers of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Wine Pairing of the Week: Zinfandel and Beef Jerky
Martini’s Gnarly Vine Zinfandel has been one of my favorites this week. This Monte Rosso wine is earthy and rich with hints of spiced baked plums, fragrant cloves, anise, and smoke. It’s peppery and has a little blackberry flavor, but it’s less jammy than many Zins. It’s 70% aged in French barrels, and the rest in American oak. It’s a monster wine at nearly 16% alcohol, but it’s still remarkably well integrated. Most importantly, it’s a wine that tastes like it came from somewhere.

Best American Wines Under $20
Michael Martini's winemaking team used vineyards around the country for a straightforward red that also has considerable finesse. That deft touch isn’t surprising, as Michael himself has been making wine for more than 30 years, and his family for more than 100.

See the versatility of Cabs
Louis M. Martini 2007 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon This wine is the star of the house style for Louis M. Martini. All of the interesting and enticing flavors found in far more costly cabernet sauvignon wines are present in this gem. A lush flavor of berries, ripe cherries and cassis are underscored by gentle oak. The finish is very long and unforgettable and is a prime example of a near-perfect cab that is still affordable.

Top-Notch (And Affordable) Napa and Sonoma Wine
It isn’t every day that you get to sit down with a third- or fourth-generation member of one of California’s founding wine families. So I was pleased as a proverbial punch to visit with Michael Martini recently as he walked me through tastings of a few of his vineyard’s recent releases. (Michael’s grandfather established Louis M. Martini in Napa County in 1933.) Apart from being a veritable encyclopedia of California’s wine scene (past and present), Mike represents what every wine enthusiast hopes to find: the genuine article. He knows the farmlands and vineyards of Napa and Sonoma Counties as a typesetter knows fonts. So he discerns which vineyard areas produce the best grapes and he has the ability to source his vineyard pickings to his liking, giving him (and us) the absolute best Cabernet Sauvignons available at mid-level prices.

Heart-Healthy Beverages
Louis M. Martini Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
With its medium to full body and hints of cedar, oak, and spice, a good Cabernet Sauvignon is a great cold-weather wine. Louis M. Martini offers a reliable label for Cabs priced in the moderate to splurge range. This one offers plenty of red and black fruits to spare. Great with steak, this wine also makes a great gift.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet is like the high-school quarterback of red grapes: muscular, charismatic, and incredibly popular. Whether bottled alone or in a blend, cabernet brings complexity and power. Its abundance of tannins and generous mouth feel make this a wine that can handle the heartiest foods. And the best cabs are built to last. With inky dark fruit, such as black cherry and cassis, as well as spicy and herbal flavors of mint and eucalyptus, this grape knows how to wow a crowd.
