2009 Monte Rosso Vineyard
Gnarly Vine Zinfandel
Considered the jewel in the crown of Louis M. Martini Winery, our Monte Rosso Vineyard is among the most highly regarded grape growing sites in California. Produced from vines over 100 years old, this wine captures the deeply concentrated flavor characteristics that are unique to these gnarled old vines. Although yields are small, these old mountain vines produce fruit of the highest quality. This rich wine offers layers of complexity that capture the true varietal character of the old head-pruned vines. Aromas of clove, cracked pepper and licorice complement hints of vanilla and barbeque spice that are subtly blended with intense flavors of plum and black fruits. This full-bodied Zinfandel is balanced with firm, velvety tannins and finishing long and spicy.

In The Vineyard
Following a cold and soggy finish to 2008, late winter and early spring of 2009 in Sonoma were unusually warm and dry. The ideally long growing season was uneventful with temperatures cooler than growers had seen in recent vintages. There was limited frost damage in April, some rains in early May, and fewer heat spikes in July and August than usual. Although yields were lower, overall the fruit was generally more elegant and rich in flavors, resulting in excellent quality wines.
