Another fabulous wine, although there’s not much of it, is the 2014 Zinfandel Gnarly Vine Monte Rosso Vineyard from this fabulous first-growth vineyard in Sonoma. This is a blend of 97% Zinfandel and 3% Petite Sirah aged in 66% new French oak, 16% new American oak and the rest used. Good natural acidity gives focus and vibrancy to this wine that comes from vines as old as 120 years.Read full article
Monte Rosso Vineyard Gnarly Vine Zinfandel
Deep and focused, our Louis M. Martini Gnarly Vine Zinfandel offers classic flavors of jammy plum, dark cherry and blueberry alongside soulful notes of clove and vanilla. Full bodied, the wine is framed by firm but supple tannins and possesses a distinctive minerality characteristic of Monte Rosso wines. The long finish concludes with juicy fruit and rousing notes of cracked black pepper.
This Zinfandel is crafted entirely from old vines—some more than 125 years old—on our Monte Rosso Vineyard, located in the Sonoma Valley. Though yields are small, the old gnarly vines produce fruit of the highest caliber, with deeply concentrated flavor characteristics. Another stellar vintage in Sonoma County in 2013 meant that fruit developed in ideal conditions. As grapes basked in the warm summer sun, developing the intense, fruit-forward flavors that are typical of old vine Zinfandel, cool nights gave fruit excellent acidity, balance and complexity.
