This small-lot Monte Rosso production is a truly distinct wine, crafted from a single block of Malbec planted on our historic vineyard in the Mayacamas Mountains. Our 2016 Monte Rosso Malbec offers enticing aromas of cedar, fresh plum and a hint of pepper. On the palate, lush notes of blackberry jam, dark roasted coffee and blackcurrant harmonize for a densely layered, full-bodied wine. <br><br> Our Monte Rosso Vineyard Malbec was hand harvested and sorted. At the winery, the grapes underwent a three-day cold soak and fermented in 3.5 and 7-ton open-top tanks. The wine aged for a total of 15 months in a combination of French oak barrels (45% new) and American oak barrels (16% new). The Monte Rosso Vineyard is perched in the Mayacamas Mountains, a thousand feet above the Sonoma Valley. From a growing perspective, 2016 was nearly ideal, with a consistently warm spring and summer guiding grapes to full and even ripeness. The steadiness of the season allowed us to be highly selective in our sourcing and unhurried with our pick times. Come harvest, which for this wine occurred between September 27 and October 10, all fruit was picked and sorted by hand. <br><br> Our concept of small-lot winemaking dates back to 1948, when Louis M. Martini began ranking his most exceptional Cabernet lots to use for a special selection blend. We honor this attention to detail with every vintage we make, fermenting Lot No. 1 in small open-top tanks, which allow for a high level of precision when extracting color and flavor. Thomann Station Vineyard benefits from the warmth of the St. Helena sun, yielding ripe, round flavors. Ideal for growing Petite Sirah, the grapes thrive in the deep, gravelly loam soils of the Napa Valley floor. Vintage 2019 was warm and evenly paced. Plentiful winter rains and a cool spring delayed budbreak, leading to rains in late May. By June, a consistently warm and steady summer emerged, encouraging canopy growth and allowing fruit to ripen slowly. Vines developed clean, healthy clusters with rich, complex flavors and excellent structure. Harvest began later in the year, with cool temperatures preserving excellent acidity. Because this fruit is literally in our backyard, it was delivered by tractor and immediately hand-sorted and destemmed. A three-day cold soak allowed for gentle extraction of flavor and color. We then used a careful combination of punch-downs and rack-and-returns during fermentation, which helped to tame the varietal’s burly tannins and build a balanced, beautifully finessed Petite Sirah. Total aging was 15 months in a combination of French (48% new) and American (10% new) oak.

All grapes were hand harvested, delivered in half-ton picking bins, then hand-sorted, destemmed and partially crushed before being gravity-fed into small open-top fermenters. The cap was alternately punched down and pumped over up to four times daily through fermentation. Fermentation took place in small open-top tanks, allowing for precise and gentle extraction of color and flavor. Each lot was aged in French oak barrels and evaluated individually, with the final blend occurring mid July. This impressive, full-bodied red wine has great depth and a surprisingly soft mouthfeel for such concentrated fruit. The wine swirls with aromas that include black cherry, earth and the classic Monte Rosso spice. On the palate, it offers red and dark fruit flavors including raspberry and blackberry, plus black fig and hints of dusty chocolate and espresso. Aging in French and American Oak created assertive-but-smooth tannins that melt seamlessly into a lingering, elegant finish filled with flavors of anise, toasted oak and vanilla. The 2014 season was excellent—dry and warm, with early bud break, steady temperatures and long hangtime. Consistently mellow temperatures through spring and summer let the grapes ripen fully and evenly, then an unusually long harvest gave us concentrated, well-structured fruit with exceptional quality and depth. The Cabernet grapes were carefully hand harvested by block and hand sorted, then gravity fed into small, open top fermenters for a 3-day cold soak before primary fermentation. After fermentation, the free run juice was drained and the must gently pressed in a 5-ton basket press. The wine was racked by gravity into oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging.
