A Legacy of Excellence

The Evolution of Winemaking at Louis M. Martini Over 90 Years

At Louis M. Martini, our winemaking journey is one of passion, innovation, and unwavering dedication to quality. For over 90 years, we have been crafting exceptional wines that capture the essence of Napa Valley. As we celebrate our rich heritage, we invite you to explore how our winemaking practices have evolved, blending tradition with modern techniques to create wines that stand the test of time.

The Beginning: A Visionary’s Dream

Our story begins in 1933, when our founder, Louis M. Martini, established his winery in Napa Valley. With a vision to produce world-class wines, Louis M. Martini was a pioneer in California winemaking. He believed that great wine could only come from great grapes, and he sought out the finest vineyard sites to realize his dream.

Louis M. Martini’s commitment to quality and innovation set the foundation for our winery. He introduced advanced techniques such as temperature-controlled fermentation and was among the first to recognize the potential of hillside vineyards. His forward-thinking approach and dedication to excellence quickly earned him a reputation as a leading winemaker in California.

“My grandfather made big robust wines in the late ‘30s, early ‘40s the Italian touch. To be what they are today [i.e., drinking well], they had to be monstrous.”

- MIKE MARTINI

The Post-Prohibition Era: Laying the Groundwork

In the years following Prohibition, the American wine industry was in a state of revival. Louis M. Martini played a crucial role in this renaissance, focusing on producing wines that showcased the unique terroir of Napa Valley. During this period, our winery expanded its vineyard holdings, acquiring prime sites that would become the backbone of our estate wines. Acquired in 1937, our Monte Rosso vineyard was renamed from Goldstein Ranch in honor of its brick-red soil and expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, and Johannesburg Riesling. Of these historic vines, the Zinfandel, Sémillon, and Cabernet Sauvignon are still producing today.

Louis M. was a pioneer in producing single-varietal wines, like Cabernet Sauvignon, and labeling them with the vintage and varietal. He noted, “Each year’s crop is different; if a person buys one and likes it and comes back for it, that avoids a mix up.”

The Second Generation: Embracing Change and Innovation

In the 1960s, Louis M. Martini’s son, Louis Peter, took the reins of the winery. Under his leadership, the winery continued to thrive, embracing new technologies and refining winemaking practices. Louis P. Martini was instrumental in introducing small-lot fermentations and barrel aging, techniques that elevated the complexity and character of our wines. He was one of the first vintners to use stainless steel fermentation tanks, believing they would give him more control over the winemaking process.

Honored by the State of California as the “Winemaker of the Century”, Louis P. made the Louis M. Martini Winery synonymous with the top quality California red wines of the 1950s and 1960s.

“My dad made really good excellent blends but they were very gentle. He never got into the big oak stuff or the heavy duty and so forth. He really thought the wine should be secondary to the food and whatever else is going on, you just empty the wine bottles and worry about something else.”

- CAROLYN MARTINI

The Modern Era: Honoring Tradition with a Contemporary Twist

Mike Martini knew from a young age that he wanted to work in wine and joined the family business in 1974. Encouraged by his father to study winemaking in France early in his career, Mike’s winemaking style differed in several ways. He began by removing the redwood tanks, and replacing them with French oak barrels. He employed European techniques including extended maceration, saying “I went to Bordeaux with André Tchelistcheff in 1981, and I thought the secret to what the Bordelais did was longer time on the skins.” In 1996, Mike introduced heritage wines such as Barbera, Folle Blanche, Gewurztraminer and Zinfandel and in 2001, it was Sherry, Barbera and Sangiovese.

In 2002, our winery underwent a major renovation, blending historic architecture with modern amenities. The new facility included an expanded barrel aging cellar, temperature-controlled fermentation rooms, and a cutting-edge tasting room. This transformation not only enhanced our winemaking capabilities but also provided a world-class experience for our visitors.

The Legacy Continues: A Focus on Innovation and Excellence

Today, Louis M. Martini remains at the forefront of the wine industry, guided by the same principles that have defined our winery for over 90 years. Our winemaking team, led by Zach Watkins, continues to push the boundaries of innovation while honoring our rich heritage.

In 2002 we built a new, state-of-the-art fermentation hall to better assist with our vision of capturing nuance and terroir. This mainly includes 36 open-top, stainless-steel fermenters, all capable of being punched down and ranging from 1.5-ton to 7.0-ton in size. We also use a small 2-ton oak tank and a 3.5-ton concrete tank. Our goal with such small tanks is to pick very precise sub-sections of our vineyards which better captures the unique nature of a specific section of land. This then, creates more depth and complexity in our wines as we head back to showcasing vineyard first.

In the cellar, we continue to refine our techniques, experimenting with new fermentation methods, barrel types, and blending practices. We are especially excited to reintroduce the use of larger oak barrels, called puncheons and casks, for aging our wines. Our overall goal is to create wines that not only reflect the unique terroir of our vineyards but also capture the essence of our winemaking philosophy: a harmonious balance of tradition and innovation.

“Our goal is to craft a collection of wines that lends itself to the holistic wine experience.”
