2021 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
Power and depth meet finesse and fragrance from a region that has been producing age-worthy wines since the 1860s. Fermented in 3-ton open-top tanks and an oak puncheon barrel, it’s full-bodied with fine-grained tannins, medium acidity, and good length. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry, star anise and violets lead to a palate of boysenberry, crushed gravel, licorice, cardamom, and sweet oak. Note that blue florals are unusual for Napa Valley Cabs, but are so indicative of the AVA.

Floral, fragrant aromas lead to very compact layers of fine-grained tannins that give it a Pauillac-like intensity that’s almost breathtaking. Violets, red and black fruit, blackcurrants and cocoa powder fill the palate and linger long on the finish. This is a classic in the making. All clone 337 from a southwest-facing vineyard not far from the San Pablo Bay. Best from 2028.
