The gryphon
The gryphon is the traditional symbol of the town of Genoa, Italy, the birthplace of Louis Martini. He set sail from the port at the young age of 12 to join his father in America, disembarked at Ellis Island then traveled by train to San Francisco, carrying a sack of bread & bologna and sporting a sign around his neck that displayed his destination in a language he couldn’t yet understand.
The gryphon symbolizes wisdom, courage, and leadership, qualities inherent in Louis as he crossed an ocean and continent alone as a child. Qualities nurtured as he built the first bonded winery in Napa post-prohibition, recognized the quality of the terroir long before others in purchasing the legendary Monte Rosso Vineyard in 1936, and was among the first to bottle vintage varietal wine.
The three sections of the gryphon’s tail represent the three generations of Martinis who have built the legacy of the brand over the past 90+ years: Louis M., Louis P., and Mike.
The gryphons sit proudly on a stave of a wine barrel, reflecting their lifelong commitment to well-aged wine and stewardship over the land.
